I’ve come to realize that everyone needs to know marketing but most don’t realize why they need it. I say this under the context that so many people see marketing from a one-dimensional perspective. They simply believe that marketing is the promotion and selling of goods and services. You can’t get any more basic than this!

It’s not that their overall viewpoint about marketing may be wrong. But they hardly ever venture to expand their thoughts beyond a particular plane. As such, for the majority of people they never consider marketing to be anything more than something they learn in school or a profession that can be undertaken to make money. Again, they need to KNOW marketing.

How some people “know” Marketing

Just to prove how limited some people think, when they hear that they must “know marketing” right away thoughts go off in their heads that they need to find some sort of course to do. Yet, most will never do a course before preparing and sending out a resume for a job. They will not do a course before putting on their best suit to impress a potential client. And they will also not do a course before going out on a date with someone.

All of the latter are part of marketing; some would argue in many cases they are even considered the most important aspects for finding success. And even with knowing this, a lot of people still put more focus on learning something (especially via formal education) as opposed to learning how to efficiently apply knowledge.

Some do everything but Marketing

It seems some people generally spend more time doing and learning things they believe they should be doing and less on what they ought to be doing. It’s been said a million times that networking more easily helps people land a job; yet the average person continues to ignore this advice and simply forward one resume after the next to random employers. Likewise, some people complain that they will forever be single; yet they refuse to set up an online dating profile or go out to meet someone.

And how can someone be a business owner and refuse to spend a cent on advertising? Yet each year is disappointed that sales don’t increase? It’s just so much easier for people to remain in their comfort zones and blame their failures and misfortunes on nepotism, biases and fate. It’s also easy for them to continue to think that what appears easy requires less effort and investment. And perhaps that everything else knowledge wise requires completion of a course for them to learn about it.

Why Marketing rules!

There is one fact that too many people still refuse to accept. The best education or the most extensive list of accolades or work experiences does not guarantee success. Marketing does. The issue often is not that people don’t recognize how important marketing is. It’s more that marketing takes time and is not always the most exciting thing to do so they make excuses; they try to do it halfway or take up a marketing course that isn’t likely to push them further.

Instead, they prefer the comfort of knowing they are trying (and failing) yet at the same time never reaching anywhere. It’s a paradox, yet one that can eternally stagnate growth and kills dreams all in one. The bottom line is that no matter what you wish to accomplish in this world you can’t go wrong knowing how to effectively use marketing to get it.

And if you’re still not convinced how important marketing really is you just read all the way to the bottom of this article, and now you’re going to share it to all of your friends. And even if you don’t share my article you will still remember that last line.

The point is, consistently using proper marketing can encourage you to take bigger risks and put in more effort to get exactly the results you want. Now, go get yours!
